The Mississippi Gulf Coast was once the home of the Biloxi Indians; later the area was inhabited by both the Spanish and the French. Local culture has been infused with all these influences. For a good example of how this history has intertwined the region visit the Old Brick House in Biloxi. The museum is a combination of French Colonial and American style and serves as a museum highlighting the history of the region. The Gulfport Centennial Museum depicts the growth of Gulfport from 1898 to the present. The museum includes photographs an audio/visual room and historic artifacts.

With more than 26 miles of white sand beaches Mississippi's Gulf Coast is an ideal spot to work on your suntan. If you have a need for more active recreation there are numerous points along the beach that will rent jet skis sailboats canoes kayaks and even scuba equipment. The beaches are uniformly gorgeous but Christian Pass and Long Beach both located just west of the Biloxi/Gulfport area are particularly stunning.

More beach time can be spent on Gulf Islands National Seashore located a few miles offshore. The islands of Ship Deer Round Horn and Petit Bois make up a series of barrier islands and are all a part of the Seashore. The islands with pristine sparkling-white beaches are known for their remoteness. They are only accessible by private or charter boat but they are well worth the trip. Swimming fishing boating hiking nature photography bird watching and exploring are just some of the activities enjoyed on the islands.

The Gulf Coast is also the place to find that perfect fishing story. Anglers from all over the world flock to the region in search of record game fish for which the area has come to be associated. There are over 200 varieties of saltwater fish swimming around these fish-heavy waters. Some of the local favorites include amberjack bonito cobia red snapper king mackerel and speckled trout. Sport mixes with fiesta during the Mississippi Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo the largest event of its kind in the world which takes place during the July 4th weekend. Other noted competitions in the area include the Kingmaster 100 and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Classic.

With over 25 courses in the area it is no wonder why the region has earned the nickname ""The Golf Coast"". One particular favorite is The Bridges an Arnold Palmer Course that has 21 wooden bridges winding through vast wetlands and luscious fairways. The course is a perfect blend of golf and nature conservancy. The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Magnolia Grove offers 54 holes of magnificent golf. Included in that figure is the #1 short course in the U.S. as rated by Golf Digest and Golf Magazine.

Mississippi's newest attractions are the many casinos that offer 24-hour gaming opportunities. Most of these mega resorts resemble (and are indeed owned by) their Las Vegas cousins. Biloxi also offers Riverboat gambling for those who want to enjoy the wind in their face as they place their bets. Not just for gambling anymore these complexes now offer such amenities as play areas for the kiddies day spas exercise rooms and musical revues to round out the casino experience.

The Gulf Coast spans the gap between serene oasis and vibrant night-life-filled adrenaline pursuit. Vacationers big or small will find something to tickle their funny bone.
