Transportation, How to Arrive: The closest airport to Spanish Wells is the North Eleuthera Airport (ELH), in Eleuthera, Bahamas. From the airport, it is about a 10 minute ground taxi ride to get to the Gene's Bay dock, where you will board a 5-minute ferry to Spanish Wells. Inquire about the local service that combines the ground taxi and ferry rate to make your trip easier. The Town of Spanish Wells: Spanish Wells is about a 1 x 3 mile island off the northern coast of Eleuthera. The population is about 1800 inhabitants, and the local Bahamians have become prosperous here with their lobster fishing. The homes in this village are quaint and colorfully painted. The town combines modern conveniences with local island charm. There are three grocery stores, about four restaurants, a few souvenir shops, a nice marina, and a museum. In the Food Fair Plaza, there is a bank and internet access shop. The town has a friendly atmosphere, and many of the locals wave to tourists as they pass by on their golf carts.
Russell Island near Spanish Wells: Russell Island is about a 4 x 2 mile wide island that connects to the town of Spanish Wells by a small bridge. This area is a little quieter and less crowded than the hustle of the Spanish Wells town. As most of Spanish Wells is already built up, the younger Bahamian generation and foreigners tend to purchase property in Russell Island. Russell Island has many fruit and palm trees.
